May 1, 2024 Newsletter

So, Passover 5784 has come and gone, and the Feast of Unleavened Bread and the Feast of Firstfruits with it.  Now we’re into the counting of the omer, the 50 days from Passover to the 4th Feast of the Lord, Shavuot or Pentecost.

But there are ‘man-made’ days of significance that we will recognize in the month of May – three to be exact.

May 6 is Yom ha Shoah, a day of remembrance of the Holocaust (Shoah).  It is especially significant this year as we witness violent and virulent displays of anti-Semitism and calls for the destruction of both the Jewish people and the Jewish State here in America and around the world.  While the ‘world’ labels the problem as ‘the war in Gaza,’ and labels Israel an “apartheid state’ and ‘guilty of genocide,’ the real root of the problem is spiritual – the eternal animosity of the enemy towards the Jewish people, ‘chosen’ by God. Why?  Destroy the Jewish people, and the Bible is not true.  Hurt God’s chosen people and hurt God.  Damage the ‘apple of God’s eye’ and cause God pain.

All that said, God has promised that Jews will be part of His creation always and that He is coming back to Israel to rule and reign, not Palestine, not China, not Russia, not even the US – Jerusalem in ISRAEL.  Stand with Israel and Jews worldwide on the 6th of May as we proclaim “never again” and remember the tragedy of the Holocaust.

May 13th is an Israeli Day of Remembrance, Yom ha Zikaron, established to memorialize Israelis who have given their lives in defense of Israel or been murdered in terror attacks since the inception of the State of Israel in 1948.  On the evening of 12 May (remember, Jewish days begin at sunset), at 8 PM, a siren will sound throughout Israel, and the country will literally stop.  Cars pull to the side of the road, drivers get out, and the nation stands in silent remembrance to commemorate the fallen and show respect.  At 11 AM on the 13th, a 2-minute siren will sound, and official ceremonies commemorating the day will begin at sites throughout Israel.  Israeli TV stations broadcast the names of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice – in 2023, the number stood at 24,213.  This year, it will increase significantly due to the 7th of October massacre and tragic loss of IDF lives in the “Gaza War.” Israel goes to great lengths to memorialize these fallen, and at sunset, another siren sounds & the celebration day recognizing the establishment of the State of Israel begins, Yom ha Atzmaut.

May 14th is Yom ha Atzmaut, a day of celebration commemorating the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.  This year, modern Israel will be 76 years old.  Schools and businesses are closed, families picnic in the parks, and there are usually airforce flyovers and celebrations.  Due to the ongoing conflict with Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, Iran, Gaza, and the West Bank, things may be more muted this year.
